Not so long ago, I discussed a crucial issue for business owners: if you could only monitor ONE KPI—other than sales—what would that be? I'll explore in this post why this question is important and how concentrating on the correct KPI may significantly affect your company.
The Power of KPIs
Running a well-oiled engine depends on measuring KPIs (Key Performance Indicators), hence as business owners we know this is vital. A strong, well-considered dashboard with KPIs offers direction and clarity, therefore giving a superb picture of your company. However, concentrating on the one KPI that will most affect your most crucial target for the quarter or year can make all the difference.
Identifying the One KPI
Choosing the right KPI requires introspection and strategic thinking. Here are some examples to get you started:
Number of Prospect Conversations: This is the KPI I focus on because it directly influences potential sales and business growth. Tracking how many prospect conversations I have each week helps me stay proactive in my outreach efforts.
Average Transaction Value (AOV): Monitoring the increase in average transaction value can provide insights into customer spending habits and help you develop strategies to boost sales.
Conversion Rate Improvement: Keeping an eye on the percentage improvement in your conversion rate allows you to evaluate the effectiveness of your marketing and sales strategies.
Your business is unique, so your “one thing” will be, too. The key is to identify the KPI that aligns with your specific goals and priorities.
The Importance of Measurement
There’s a saying I firmly believe in: What gets measured gets managed. Finding and monitoring the correct KPI results in clarity, concentration, and observable improvement. It's about knowing the narrative they tell and applying that knowledge to guide wise decisions, not only about the numbers.
Accountability: The Missing Piece
Tracking is just one part of the equation. Accountability is the other. Every Friday, I have a reporting partner who holds me accountable for covering my weekly prospect contacts. I then let him answer for spending 120 minutes a week working on his new offer. This little conversation helps us both to stay on target and advance the needle.
Coaching Clients and Accountability
Some of my coaching clients have also asked me to be their accountability partner. I set a reminder on my phone and send them a brief text at the agreed upon hour and time. This habit works miracles and offers the push required to keep dedicated to their objectives.
So, what’s your one KPI other than sales? Identify it, start tracking it, and find someone to hold you accountable for it. If you’re not sure which KPI matters most—or if you’d like me to review your KPI dashboard—reach out to me. Let’s schedule a time to ensure you’re tracking the metrics that truly move the needle in your business.
By focusing on the right KPI and leveraging accountability, you can achieve greater clarity, focus, and progress in your business. Remember, it’s not just about tracking numbers; it’s about making informed decisions that drive meaningful results.
